Dwayne Fontenette

Dwayne Fontenette

The son, nephew, and grandson of public school teachers, Dwayne followed his family’s tradition and became a high school mathematics teacher in 2013 at Philadelphia, PA’s Charter High School for Architecture and Design. Following his time in the classroom, Dwayne moved to Boston, MA, where he served as the Director of Operations at the Eliot K-8 Innovation School and then as the Director of School and Community Engagement at Summer Search Boston. Most recently, Dwayne served as the Chief of Staff to a Senior Vice President at Teach For America.

While heavily influenced by his relatives’ education careers, Dwayne’s journey to the field of education was cemented during his freshman year in high school when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and he lost his childhood home. The televised images of despair that captivated the nation following Hurricane Katrina awakened Dwayne to inequities in New Orleans and fueled his resolve to work towards the day when every child has access to an excellent education that equips them with the knowledge and skills they need to live fulfilling lives.

Outside of work, Dwayne volunteers with the Boy Scouts of America, where he currently serves as the diversity, equity, and inclusion lead for the 2023 National Jamboree and for the BSA’s national honor society (Order of the Arrow). In his free time, Dwayne can be found hiking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Dwayne earned a B.A. in Political Science and Public Relations from Loyola University New Orleans and a M.S. in Urban Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

“My purpose is helping others understand and act on their power to create change.”
